Ellen Negley is known for her bright, colorful, and whimsical watercolor scenes. Negley grew up in Peoria, Illinois, attended the University of Iowa and later made the move to Lake Worth Beach, Florida. The artist has the ability to capture what she sees in front of her and happily rearranges even the most mundane of scenes into interesting compositions that make you wish you could live inside one of her paintings. Her favorite subjects include worn and tattered boat yards, funky dockside marinas, beaches and other coastal hangouts where she can set forth her unique vision of the world while capturing the everyday hustle and bustle in bold, exciting color and composition. Negley is a signature member of the Florida Watercolorist Society. She studied under Frank Webb, Frank Francese, Larry Gerber, Garri Katz, and Don Andrews.
“For me, watercolor is the perfect medium. It’s elusive, unpredictable and has a mind of its own. I’m fascinated by its nuances. One minute the colors are bold and electric and the next they’re delicate and transparent. If I painted every day for the rest of my life, I still wouldn’t know all there is to know. My watercolors are a reflection of my surroundings so lately, my paintings are likely tropical. There is something so special about the light in south Florida and I am captivated by tropical foliage, especially palm trees, as you might have noticed. I also love including figures in my paintings because it’s the people that make the place.”
